Why be All-Consuming?

why All-Consuming?

All-Consuming is the art of wasting nothing and using up everything.

You wouldn't get off a train halfway through a journey and buy a ticket for another one. And you wouldn't walk out of a movie before it's finished and pay to see it again (especially not if it had Vin Diesel in it).

But that's sort of what you're doing when you buy new stuff rather than using up the things you've already got.

And doing that harms more than just your bank balance. Making and transporting new goods requires raw materials and energy, and so creates lots of nasty CO2.

And to top it off, most things we chuck out spend the rest of their days rotting in a landfill site, where they produce more CO2 as well as other noxious greenhouse gases.

Which is why we need to start All-Consuming and stop throwing things away prematurely. Don't dump those holey socks - get a-darning. Don't throw out your leftovers - turn them into a nice broth instead. And don't bin your well-loved Snoopy doll - there's life in that old dog yet.

Why? Tell you why

If some stuff-chucking wastrel demands to know why you're All-Consuming, don't throw away the chance to re-use one of those great comebacks:

  1. My bin-man's recovering from a hernia, and I'm helping his convalescence
  2. If I don't finish my leftovers, your mum will be round to eat them. Because she's fat, you see.
  3. Shopping and me go together like rappers and modesty
  4. If I hang on to everything I ever buy, chances are at least one item will become a valuable antique by the time I'm 90
  5. There's a goblin living in my bin and I'm trying to starve him out.

Thanks chrissmith, entirely reasonable post btw - you get full credit for the"World Matzah Crisis" headlines when the story breaks globally, it's just a matter of time ;-) And thanks also laurajanecarter keep up the good work with those scissors.

i love this site. I am a total all consumer already... cutting my toothpaste tubes open with scissors to get every last drop out and hanging onto clothes until they come back into fashion (or not). But its nice to know I'm not the only one and now I have a decent jusitification for being such a skin flint! Great site, great message!

I found this site by clicking on the spotify ad, which I think is great btw :)...I'm a total waster unfortunately and I can’t see it changing soon (I'm a man of convenience ya see) but I do like the site, the comedy aspect and the fact that it will give my mum who is a total user hours of fun...However the main reason I started this post was to point out the huge 'matza' wastage shown in the video. Apart from the fact that the content of the video, while amusing, is contradictory to its own cause and to this website, I am saddened to report that last week while in my local supermarket I didn't see a single box/pack of 'matza' anywhere. I don't like to point fingers (or rant) but I can only assume one of two things; either the planet finds itself in the middle of a matza shortage (in which case wasting it as shown in the video is very irresponsible) OR that the makers of this video bought **ALL** the matza which isn't very considerate to others. But seriously :) great video, great song and great site so keep it up :). (PS. Undoubtedly someone will comment on the fact that I should go and do something useful rather than posting pointless rants on the internet...Well if anyone should think that, then I would like to make it known that I have just worked a 12 hour shift and still have work to do so this is just a bit of fun for me before I get back to it. That is all.)

This is the bit that's missing from all of the "green" product reviews. Each review ought to start with, "this is a great product to get AFTER your old version is dead, destroyed, used up, etc." I keep thinking it's better to hang onto my 28 mpg car until it's completely undrivable than it is to chuck it with 95K miles on it in favor of a hybrid that gets 10 mpg more. And I've caught myself, more than once, nearly placing a mail order for those cute reusable shopping bags. I backed away from the computer, went to my closet & pulled out the many tote bags I've accumulated over the years for one reason or another. Thanks for the post. M'lou Arnett
