The humble tap. You turn it on, and cold, local, nutritious water comes out. When you've had enough, you turn it off. Simple. Perfect. And yet, instead, we transport tonnes of the stuff all around the world in little plastic bottles, ¾ of which don't get recycled. Tap water is 1,000 times cheaper than bottled, releases over 1,000 times less CO2 per litre, and tastes almost identical. Because it's water.

  • If you really, honestly, cross-your-heart-and-hope-to-die, don't like the taste of tap water, you can get yourself a snazzy filter jug. And if you suffer from a weird phobia of jugs, you can always install a filter tap to your sink instead.
  • For those that want water on the go, get yourself a reusable water bottle like this or even like this. And if stainless steel goes better with your outfit, get yourself one of these.
  • The cunningly named N'eau bottled water does what it says on the tin. You buy an empty bottle and fill it up from the tap. Brilliant.
  • Proudly show-off your tap water credentials with a sticky tap label like this one, and help fund water projects in Africa.
  • Your tap water doesn't travel thousands of miles to get to you, and your food needn't either. There's nothing better to perfectly complement your glass of local tap than a plate of delicious vitamin-packed,locally produced nosh.

Here's a thing - Claridges hotel, one of the nicest B&Bs London has to offer, has a water menu featuring 30 different types from every corner of the globe. You can order volcanic water from New Zealand springs, or, if you prefer, Artesian spring H20 from Shuzenji, Japan. All for up to 100,000 times the price of cleaner, healthier, humble tap. Money can't buy you love, or common sense either it seems.
