Stick With What You Got

The latest phone in pink titanium. The latest laptop that's 2mm thinner. Peer pressure and ad pressure means you're incomplete unless you buy them. Trouble is, surplus consumption leads to surplus production and CO2 so far better if you can Stick With What You Got - and be happy.

I don't want to live like an old man looking a things all day long and I won't stop myself to buy things like climbing cloths if I want to climb, a bike to do some biking or a pc if I want to game. I just have to think about needs versus offers. If I apply your thinking, next time I'll see an homeless person, I'll buy I'm a good nothing.

Just stumbled on this blog and am in love. You're sending a great message and it's awesome to see people embracing the repair don't replace lifestyle. I work for www.partselect.com and we're big supporters of the green movement, DIY and making the most out of what you already own. Always happy to come across other like-minded individuals.

I recently revived an old PC that dates back to 1997. I could install a very light version of Linux and the system runs smoothly, much better with the old Windows 95 :D Once I had it revived it became a gift for my cousin's child. He was all happy with that. Now he can use a computer as an educational mean. Linux is actually a very green solution: it comes with no cd, it doesn't need any shipping (you download it), there's no bulky package and you can print only the part you really need of its manuals. You can run it on the latest laptop or on a 1997 desktop pc. It comes with all the programs you need for working and learning and last but not least: it's free, you do not have to pay for anything unless you wish to make a donation or buy some goodies from the online stores. With the money you save you can do something else, maybe buying some seeds and plant them in your garden or in a pot and enjoy flowers, fruits or just some catnip for your furry friend.

This was not meant just for any one country - here in the US we are also subject to the absurd advertising pressures to buy Buy BUY new New NEW, I opted out years ago. I only replace when what I have completely stops working. Then I recycle appropriately and replace it only if I really need it, and then with an eye to efficiency. If I can get by with a used model I do - I'm big on thrift stores. ;-)

I'd rather die that have Gordon Brown mess this country up even more, so I won't be doing the Stick or Twist test.
