Can't Stick? Buy An Old Thing

New things are born into a life of carbon crime. It takes precious resources and energy to make them and gallons of fossil fuel to transport them, all of which creates more CO2. And if all that wasn't enough, research shows that new stuff doesn't even make us happy. Huh.

Old things already exist so have far less impact on the environment when they change hands. If we could buy more old things instead of new things, or curb some of our materialistic urges and buy fewer things, we'd save CO2, spend less money and spend more time with things that matter most.

• Buy an old thing, or even sell an old thing on eBay, that virtual treasure chest of second-hand goodies.
• Or browse Craig's List, like eBay but smaller and shaped like a list, or Gum Tree.
• Then there's always the mighty Amazon marketplace and Zshops.
• Feeling broody? For second hand baby things try baby-things.com or ebabee.co.uk And whilst you're at it treat yourself to something nice at This Old Thing.
• Do a good thing whilst buying an old thing and check out clothes, furnishings and lots of other goodies in your local charity shop.

In the UK, more than 68,000 people earn their primary or secondary income this way. ˜Environmentalism" and "entrepreneurialism" even sound quite alike.
