A Criminal Waste of Unworn Clothes

A consumer society gone mad. As the NY imes puts it: "It is winter. A third of the city is poor. And unworn clothing is being destroyed nightly."

Unworn and unsold clothes from stores like H&M and WalMart are not just being thrown out instead of donated, they are being systematically destroyed so nobody else can use them!

According to graduate student Cynthia Magnus who noticed a pile of clothes on the way to the subway, the spoiled garments included: “Gloves with the fingers cut off. Warm socks. Cute patent leather Mary Jane school shoes, maybe for fourth graders, with the instep cut up with a scissor. Men’s jackets, slashed across the body and the arms. The puffy fiber fill was coming out in big white cotton balls.”

On 35th Street, hundreds of Wal-Mart sale clothes were found in garbage bags the week before Xmas with holes punched through each item by a machine.

Pretty damn outrageous and NOT a green thing.

Apparently, on Jan. 6, H & M was the No. 2 trending topic on Twitter because of this. They've since said their normal practise it to donate and they don't understand why this NY store did what it did but they've pledged never again... http://bit.ly/7AtlOE

Perhaps some creative young designers can collaborate with some charity to recycle these rags into ingenious new designs, maybe train up and give the unemployed a chance to learn and earn? But it is absolutely a crime - the waste and inefficiency in the capitalist system. Who says religion is dead - many obviously worship the Almighty Money. And they should be sectioned.

That's terrible. I hope these stores wake up and change their policies.
