Street Librarian Laura Moulton has been out and about pedaling a library around the streets of Portland, Oregan. The bicycle-powered mobile library is a way for people who live outside and/or have no permanent address to avail of the services of a library. Street Books simply uses an old-school card catalogue system to keep track of its books. Online they have a blog in which patrons, if they so wish, can be photographed with their favourite piece of literature and even write reviews and contribute their own life stories.
Reading is a great way to Plug-Out and relax. It allows you to enter a new world and broadens the mind at the same time. And that is why this is such a fantastic service. Laura Moulton is giving back to the community and giving people the chance to read who might not otherwise get the opportunity to loan books. It brings together people often marginalised by society and provides a common interest and meeting point. It is an inspiring venture!

Moving on from a pedal powered library what about a library for pedal power? Back in March we told you all about the The bike borrowing library. Since then things have gotten bigger and better at the Bike Library. They now offer their service from a converted bus and so, the Bicycle Library Bus has been born! All the same wonderful assets as before but with the added benefit of being in a cool bus and having a first floor gallery which sells clothing and biking accessories!
We salute these extraordinary efforts at Pedaling-The-Pedals!
