Boatanic

Boatanic: part boat, part botanic and part allusion to the Titanic, carrying a message of disaster. But this time its not the boat we're meant to be worried about, its our planet.

The idea is to make use of discarded tourist boats, by converting them into floating greenhouses that grow food to supply local areas with fresh seasonal food. Damian O'Sullivan, the man behind the idea had an epiphany ‘What if you replaced tourists with thyme or tomatoes?’ So he did.

Boatanic is revitalising waterways as a method of transport, creating a new source of fresh year-round seasonal herbs, fruit and vegetables as well as introducing a new local food economy.

The produce grown will get sold directly from the quay and also delivered by bike to restaurants, as well as be available via a monthly subscription for a basket of homegrown goodies.

The pilot will be up and running in Amsterdam by 2011.

It's a wonderful and cleverly designed all-consuming idea.
