Bye Bye Kitty, Hello Fukoro-Chan

This video may not be very easy to understand at first glance. It was created by a Charles Ward, an English man living in Japan. Frustrated by the amount of plastic bag waste there, he wanted to create awareness and a campaign around protecting the environment. His solution? Appealing to the masses using his own new Anime character. Anime is popular Japanese cartoons.

His character is called Fukuro-chan and he is a plastic bag. He will be appearing in a feature length film as well as in several comic strips. This is a great example of creativity vs. climate change- using a popular cultural icon to illustrate an environmental message. Plus, Hello Kitty is pretty cool, but can you imagine Fukoro-chan becoming a globally recognised anime character,  not just for being a cute bag, but for carrying an important message.

I too was also fed up with the sheer amount of plastic and packaging in Japan. Although the vast majority of things are recycled there, it still uses more energy to produce and then recycle plastic, then to have never produced it in the first place. It all links into the Japanese culture of packaging, and presentation also. This formed part of my first blog post on Japan: http://ethicalnippon.nbunce.com/2010/04/hyper-consumerism/
