Recycled/Reborn - Nirvana in a bottle

The Wat Pa Maha Chedio Kaew Temple of Million Bottles about 600 kms from Bangkok, is constructed from around 1.5 million recycled bottles. Not only are beer bottles used as the main sustainable building material, the walls are also decorated with beautiful, intricate bottle cap mosaics.

The temple was started back in 1984 by one monk, sick and tired of all the bottles, mainly green Heineken bottles and brown glass Thai Chang beer bottles, dumped all over the nearby land.

As one traveller noted: "I had to laugh when I saw that even the crematorium was done with bottles. This is a good place for a drinking man to be cremated I think."
