Take Two Lost Halves And Add Them Together...

Take two lost halves, add them together and what have you got? A brilliantly sustainable and strangely fashionable pair of Glove Love gloves, that's what.

But there must be loads of other Glove Love type ideas out there for wasted parts which could make ingenious combinations (without using a lot of energy to make)?

For instance, here's someone turning odd socks and gloves into "hand-made sock monsters for every ocassion".

Although technically that's recycling or upcycing (taking old stuff and making it into new stuff), which everyone knows about. What we're talking about is more creative re-use. What about, say, making your own houseboat - does that count?

Actually, no. That's utterly brilliant but we're specifically talking about taking two or more wasted single parts and combining them into a new pair or collection, without any manufacturing in the process.

Things which combine form (they must look great), function (and still do a useful job - like, um, keep your hands warm), and systemic sustainability (in the case of Glove Love, each glove evades landfill and avoids a new pair being bought with all the resources that uses).

In other words, ideas which stay true to The Glove Love Princple. So if you've got any suggestions about other things like this we could do, please tell us in the comments below - we'd love to hear them.

Since we started talking about socks, we did think of doing Sock Love (which sounds even more open to misinterpretation than Glove Love) but wondered if the hygiene factor was a problem. Even though they're washed, somehow other people's socks seem less romantic to buy and wear than gloves ;-)

Perhaps that's why you don't see that many single socks for sale. Mind you, there are bargains to be had if you hunt around - still two days of bidding left to buy this machine washable, size 6-11 single black sock on ebay for instance.

Of course there's no reason everyone couldn't just do this themselves at home and make their own odd sock pairs. And you'd think with a bit of global digital connectivity this could itself turn into a worldwide movement - Odd Sock Lovers Of The World Unite! Sadly, when we searched Flickr we could only find one right now (he's called Paul).

So, come on Green Things - what are some ideas for more Glove Love type projects?

Shoes perhaps?

Or jewelry?

Or something else entirely? Please leave your All-Consuming ideas in the comments below. We're all ears.

thx smilealong - plse send gloves to Green Thing, 2nd Fl, 67/69 Whitfield St, W1T 4HF (better if you can visit http://www.dothegreenthing.com/glove_loves/new and upload a pic of your gloves and then print an address label with a code that lets us notify you when your glove has found true love ;-)

Frugal websites can be good for ideas like this - see for example http://frugalliving.about.com. I found over 100 secondary uses for used newspapers on it...

How about fun for humanity.. via hosting sock puppet making workshops.. then you can bring them out on the town and have an alter ego... and get all of the pokey bits off of you through your sock. It could be your eco natzi sock... telling off people.. or giving the well behaved folk lots of acknowldgement when they make decisions about STUFF that shows a basic level of AWARENESS!!!! go team! Make your sock puppet TODAY!!! share up cycling with a mate!

thanks for your welcome andyh. it's turning out to be a bit of a mess as I had to re-register and I still could not get my chosen name accepted... oh well never mind. I see what you mean about socks though. staying with the glove theme, how about one of you creative people make another video titled 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Gloves Club Band'? ;)

Welcome federica_pojaga - I guess my thought is that making sure the socks are hygenic is much less of an issue than people feeling comfortable wearing something that's been on other people's feet. But sock monsters are ok I think.

I just read about Glove Love in Springwise and that's how I got here! I have just registered so I am new but love it already. I am pretty fanatical about recycling stuff, clothes in particular; I keep them because 'you never know' or 'I could make something with it'. My last project has been to reduce T-sirts to threads and now I am making a colourful rug for my daughter. I made sock dolls and had thought about Sock Love but had the same thoughts about hygiene highlighted by andhy above... isn't there a way of making sure the socks are absolutely hygienic so they can be used to make said dolls/monsters as I believe there are far more odd socks than odd gloves lying about (I myself have loads, must check gloves situation so I can send them in)!

what about something like turning old bits of jewellery into new - threading rings, or old brooches, or single earrings, bangles even on to some (recycled??) cord to make necklaces? Would probably need to sanitise something like earrings though, and not sure what recycled thing to use as cord... the first thing that sprang to mind was floss :) but a slightly less gross idea might be thin strips of nice old fabric.

This post reminded me of some fab recycling pics I came across recently - skip conversions, turning ugly old skips into practical and lovely things. The designer has re-imagined them into things like a garden, table-tennis table, swimming pool, seating area, even a skateboard ramp. Genius bit of upcycling. http://www.oliverbishopyoung.co.uk/conversions.html

Maybe I'm ahead of my time but I just don't wear pairs of things because then it doesn't matter if you lose one. I've always worn odd socks and earrings, even the laces on my boots don't match!
