The Strength of Sticky Rice


Besides being a very tasty Dim Sum snack, sticky rice has proven to be quite the resource when it comes to structural integrity in China.


Scientists have recently discovered the presence of sticky rice in and around Chinese buildings- from tombs to city walls, the rice has been used to make mortar.


This all-consuming idea shows that sometimes the best materials are what you've got just lying around. Some buildings have withstood earthquakes and 1,500 years of weathering. Who knew starches were so strong?
