In 2000 George Marshall bought a 1930s ex-council family terraced house that needed more than a little dragging into the 21st century. It was cold, old, draughty, and the victim of numerous DIY jobs gone horribly wrong. Undeterred, George with his family set about transforming it into a warm, cosy, inviting home and the model of eco-friendliness and efficiency.
The result - a beautifully comfy but green home crafted to high environmental standards using sustainable materials, complete with grass roof and solar water heating. Fantastically impressive. And not as pricey to do as you'd think - the interiors were furnished using high quality inexpensive salvaged materials, including an oak kitchen that cost all of £120. Plus, household bills were slashed by a whopping two-thirds with the house using only a third of the water, electricity and gas of its neighbouring homes.
You can follow the whole amazing journey and check out exactly what George did and how he did it at http://www.theyellowhouse.org.uk/. An invaluable resource for anyone looking for tips and ideas on living more sustainably.
