Think again.
Jeffrey Borinski manages (quite brilliantly) to watch Freeview on this Marconiphone 702 from 1936 - the UK's oldest working television.

So what could by rights be a museum piece is a fully-functioning entertainment system that he uses to watch films from the 1930s and 40s. Hats off to you, Mr Borinski.
And he's not alone in the quest to save perfectly good gadgets from the bin - just read the lovely comments on the BBC website where you can also watch a video of the TV in all it's glory.
Makes your TV from 2005 look positively new, doesn't it?
