Solar powered plane breaks records

The Solar Impulse team have managed to safely land a 26 hour solar powered flight.

The plane has 12,000 solar cells arranged on its wingspan which collect energy and store them in batteries for when the sun strength is low. This has been the biggest milestone for Solar Impulse who have proved that solar powred aircrafts can fly through the night, despite there not being strong sun, through the batteries.

The team will now start building a new and more advanced model of the plane so that they can reach their goal of circumnagivating the earth by 2013.

Could this be the future of flying?

Plugged out speakers

There is no faulting simple, energy free speakers. And 'Change the Record' are some of the trendiest ones out there. The idea of reworking old vinyl records comes from designer Paul Cocksedge. These low tech amplifiers are made to be used with smart phones and are wonderful as there is no need for wires or electricity! Paul was able to create the conic shape which enhances sound by heating and moulding 12" records. The design is a clever, retro throw back to older music forms as it encompasses the record and the shape of a gramophone. No hipster smartphone user is complete without one.

To continue listening to music in a Plugged Out fashion check out these solar powered speakers and these wooden ones.

100 years old and still pedaling the pedals

(Image: UCI)

If ever you needed inspiration to get out and Pedal The Pedals, here it is. Robert Marchand is 100 years old and still gets on his bike. In fact he is SO enthusiastic about cycling that he just broke a record for the furthest distance ridden in an hour in the 100-and-over-category. He cycled 15 miles to break the record. He didn't really have much compeition. Well, he is 100! Mr Manchard said he wanted to do something special to mark the occasion. Impressive stuff none the less. We commend you Mr Marchand.

Think its too chilly for a cycle? Then you need to read this!
