A clever bike lock

You kind of get the impression that the person whose idea is behind this new bike lock, has been a vicim of bike theft.

bike

Conrad, a German company is protoyping a lock that scales up a lamp post for added security for bike owners. It's a pretty simple mechanic, whereby a cyclist locks their bike as normal to a post, and then presses a button on a remote that shoots the bike up meters off the ground.

It's a very nice, unusual contraption. Let's hope it takes more than just a ladder to beat this lock.

Watching The Wheels

It's National Bike Month and there's no better way to celebrate than spreading lots of glorious cycling related inspiration to get more people pedalling the pedals.

As our favorite tech savvy DaftPunk might put it...buy it, use it, park it, lock it, track it, fold it, watch don't lose it! Whether you wheels are new, re-cycled or been around for ever, you've got to watch them closely. Oh yes, I'm talking about the mean old bike snatchers.

Any cyclist who has lost his or her wheels to theft will tell you, it's like loosing a much needed and much loved appendage. But not to worry! Here are seven handy tricks and ideas to keep your two-wheeled friend safe from harm and yourself Pedalling the Pedals, merry and care free.

1. We love this Plant Lock. It literally uses flower power to anchor down your bike and keep it safe and sound. When filled up with compost and lovely green plants the planting bin weighs more than 168 pounds (that’s 76kg). That’s some heavy plants! It's virtually impossible to shift or cut through the Plant Lock and it's a practical, reliable yet beautiful way to keep those wheels safe. Pretty perfect don't you think?

2. Most people protect their cars with screaming alarms, why not do the same to protect your trusty bicycle? After all, it gets you in all sorts of places your car could never get through, it's totally carbon free and needs just as much TLC as the next four wheeler.

This nifty Lock Alarm will do the trick. The lock and cable unit comes in a range of different sizes but even the smallest lock will sound a piercing 120 decible siren when sneaky bicycle burglars try to force the lock or to cut through the cable. You can get these in most countries, so wherever you are you can give your bike a shrieking voice box to call out for help and ward off those thieves.

3. If you're a playful sort, check out this fantastically fun Bicycle Ferris Wheel we've marveled over in a previous blog. It's a fabulous way to keep those precious bicycles out of the reach of thieving hands.

4. Where better to secure your wheels than way up high where nobody but you can reach? How about a bicycle tree? Yes, a bicycle tree. Both practical and secure, its the perfect safety solution that also conveniently frees up space in crazy cluttered cities.

If you like the idea of stowing your bike up in the sky, then check out what this pair of clever clogs from Germany have come up with. They've created a lamp pole lock that allows you to hoist your bike up the nearest lamp post where not even the craftiest thief can get to it. Creative and effective.

5. Embrace the Inspector Gadget in you. Register your bike with national databases, track it with these clever devices and be tech savvy to help other people recover their stolen wheels.

Try Immobiltag. It's a clever tracking device you hide in your bicycle frame that contains a unique serial number. The police can use this number to follow the movements of your stolen wheels and help you get them back. This gadget is provided by Immobilise, a website that allows you to register you bike and serial number with certified UK national property database.

If you aren't in the UK have no fear. Kryptonite Bike Revolution is global bike registration service designed to create a global community of bike lovers that can help identify and return stolen bikes. All you have to do is register your bike on the Bike Revolution Website, get yourself a super-resistant Pulse ID tag and stick it on your bicycle frame.

6. If you happen to be in Tokyo and want a safe spot to park your bike, then go check out the amazing Bicycle Parking Towers. Watch this video explain how this crazy but convenient super-contraption works. It's like a magic bicycle parking lot!

As more and more Green Things around the world hop on their bike saddles to Do the Bike Thing we need more secure and practical spaces to leave our much loved bicycles without cluttering rails and posts. These Bicycle Parking Towers are an ingenious idea!

7. Can't bear to part with your bike at all for fear of losing it to a nasty robber? Invest in a magical fold up bike. It's super simple and sweet as pie. Just fold it up and take it with you!

If your bike does get stolen, and you just need to vent some of that anger and frustration with nasty bike thieves then check out this website where you can share your story with fellow victims of bike theft and be comforted.

Just to be on the safe side, here is another lovely website with some more ideas for watching those wheels!

Bike Hunters to the rescue

(Image: Sanjosebikeblog)

It's every bike owners worst nightmare. You come back to where you left your precious ride and all you can see is...well, nothing.

You stand there staring at where it used to be, helmet dangling uselessly from your hand before turning round and trudging off to the bus station, fighting back the rage (and yes, the tears).

In Málaga, Spain, a site called Bicibuscadores was set up in March by a group of cyclists who had had enough. Translating to Bike Hunters, this site is for tracking black spot bike thefts areas, warning other cyclists and also, hopefully, getting you back your pride and joy.

When disaster strikes, you log onto Bicibuscadores and geotag where your bike was stolen from. You put up as many details as you can about how in happened (i.e. which lock you used, was it removed or cut, was the whole bike taken) and you can add a photo of your bike so that others can keep an eye out for it.

The idea is that if enough people tag where their bike was nicked from, a pattern will emerge showing the most risky areas to leave your two wheeled friend. It will hopefully give the police a heads up as to where to keep an eye on too.

The site is only in Beta at the moment and currently just focused on Málaga but plans are to roll it out across Spain, and hopefully further afield.

I know it would be welcomed with open arms here in Britain.

In the meantime, check out our tips on keeping your bike safe and read about how one man stole his bike back from the guys that stole it.
