Twisted Supermodel, Sticky Supermodel
by Unit 10 Collective
REPORTED
70657

Take one person and make her the ultimate twister, taking every chance to consume something new. Now take the same person and make them the ultimate sticker, sticking with what they had wherever possible. How different would their lives be? That was question that the talented animators David Altweger, Mira Loew, Guillaume Cornet of Unit 10 Collective (www.unit10collective.com) wanted to explore - with one super-ironic twist. What if that person was the world's premier consumption temptress, a certain... 'supermodel' (can you guess who)?

The result is a brilliant slice of double stop frame fantasy exclusive to Green Thing.

David, Mira and Guillaume were given fabulous musical assistance by the brilliant people of Elmore Judd. The Sticky Supermodel music is by Jesse Hackett with Louis Hackett, Tom Skinner and Shabaka Hutchings featuring the voiceover talent of Jessie Mills. The Twisted Supermodel music is by Jesse Hackett with Tom Kenyatta's production, graced by Jessie's voice over again.

And after-effects and flash cleverness were provided by Aaron Trinder, Steven Qua and Debbie Brooks.

Huge twisted/sticky thanks to them all.

Your advert on spotify was one of the worst most annoying adverts I have ever heard. Because of this it was also the only one I have consciously responded to. Does this make it successful? I don't know. I did watch your almost-as-annoying video but I haven't really thought much about the point you are making. Maybe I waste too much stuff maybe I don't I don't know, what I am really thinking about is just how ******* annoying that advert was!

Hey, I liked the video, and personally thought it was v effectively done. And that's the thing isn't it, marketing is all around us whether we like it or not, and companies will go to great lengths to wheedle their way into our psyche. It's our choice to be consumer slaves or not. And economic growth - the way we're doing it now anyways - can't carry on indefinitely because that depends on resources that are themselves finite. No point in blindly walking into a crisis, I have faith that human beings are cleverer than that!

This is fun - and makes a serious point about our collective overconsumption which is of course fuelled by marketeers selling us their dream. For me conscious consumerism must be the way forward.

OK, sorry. I tried so hard not to cross the line, looks like I’ve failed, again. Your argument is completely qualitative (of course) and while it is undeniable that higher consumption directly means more waste maybe that is simplistic view of the situation? What change do you wish to affect on the consumer culture? Quantitative or otherwise and do you have any equations that relates this to future development, more specifically ‘green’ tech? Stagnation of our economy, I am quite certain would result in a net loss for the environment in the medium to long term. You say you come from a marketing background, this is clear. In my background the numbers were king and Marketing, translates: … no, not going to cross the line today.

Happy to discuss Iceman - but plse 'play nice' (as it says in our ts&cs). If you're going to insult people it's not a good way to have a conversation. Fair enough? Got a feeling we'll simply disagree on a lot of this stuff - which is fine of course, can't agree on everything - but I think there's a misunderstanding here (and I'm perfectly prepared to say perhaps that's us not communicating well). We're *not* suggesting don't buy anything ever, or even for a whole month. We're just saying think about how much you buy and get stuff when you need it, not for the sake of it. A lot of stuff people buy they throw away quickly or don't use much - it's not good for the environment and it wastes money. Given my background in marketing/creative comms I know for a fact the extent to which the marketing industry puts energy into convincing people to buy stuff they might not necessarily need ("this year's model" and all that). I can see why the way we communicated this might have pissed you off (and perhaps particularly because it was a bit 'in your face' ads on Spotify interrupting the music etc) but I can't see why you think the underlying idea of stepping off the consumer rollercoaster is so controversial.
andyh about 1 year ago.
iceman2
Is this government funded? Let's imagine everyone in the UK stopped buying anything new, for just 1 year. Any idea what the consequences would be? Do you think we would have a better place to live in? Do you think it would be a place where the environment was a priority for people? Morons!

erm...what is the point in this? I'd like those 4 minutes back from watching the videos If this is a genuine personal point about Kate Moss' lifestyle and its consequences on her future then why did you have to waste my time with adverts about it on Spotify. This thing that you are supplying me with is of no use. Or maybe this is just about gathering views and stirring up a wee bit of noise about yourself, in which case you've succeeded in luring me here expecting to be further annoyed by a piece of pointless, irrelevant, teeth grindingly piss poor art. CIf this is infact the case, then congratulations, you have won. You've filled me with more questions than I thought i'd have (which I guess makes this an interesting piece of art?) Why Kate Moss? What's so bad about her? Why place ads on spotify? Was it the cheapest and most efficient way of garnering an audience? Did you hope that it would be the right audience? Is this just an attempt at putting your name out there? Am I contributing to your success right now by venting my spleen on this? I cant say anymore as I feel I'm giving you too much credit where it isn't due. Don't bother me again with anything like this ever again.

Iceman, there's really no need to be rude. And shouldn't believe everything I'm told?? I'm a physicist, not some halfwit who gets all their information from sensationalist headlines. Let the big boys deal with it? Which big boys exactly? Same ones which caused the biggest financial collapse in 70 years? This is something we all need to deal with.

gee, you anti-green folk seem a pretty bad-mannered and bad-tempered lot! Do you go round stealing from grannies in your spare time or something? Iceman, who said anything about living in mud huts and destroying society, don’t be so ridiculous. and ok forget statistics, let's talk facts - not opinions but proper scientific-based observed facts and projections. Fact - this planet's population will be 7 billion in 2 years time. Fact - based on current projections it'll top 9 billion by 2050. Fact - the planet isn't going to magically expand. Fact - people need food, water and shelter. Fact - oil is a finite resource. Fact - we use fossil fuels for practically everything - agriculture, transport, manufacturing, plastics, the chemical industry. Fact - at some point, because oil's finite - it's going to run out. And we're not talking 500 years here. Fact - landfill space is already running out - we have something like 9 years of landfill space left in the UK. Fact – the stuff we bury in the ground can leach toxic particles into the ground soil. Fact - there's a plastic soup of junk - our junk - spread across millions of miles and weighing about 3 million tonnes in the Pacific Ocean. Fact - big multinational mining corporations force indigenous cultures from their lands so they can get at resources. I could go on about air pollution, over-fished seas, diminishing mineral resources, water shortages, overgrazed land, monocultures. Patronising and lies???? I can point you to any number of news articles and scientific research on any of these – and not originating from environmental groups. But then, sticking your head in the sand is so much easier isn’t it.

The problem will always be ongoing so I don't know what all the fuss is about. We live (and probably always will live) in a Capitalist society. As far as the consumerism issue goes. I think the more you've got then the more you want, and If you haven't got it in the first place then you wont want it. Advertising, especially make-up... are make up companies selling Photoshop or their own product. It's a complete lie, but that's what it's all about and i've fallen victim to it plenty. The art above I think is very good but i've seen better in Adbusters, hitting at the same issue.

This could have been done so well... *COUGH* *COUGH* Talented? How is this in anyway talented? It's juvenile in execution and in concept. A retarded child would have made a much better animation with pasta, glitter and straws whilst consuming half as much as the animators. Maybe you should steal that for your next animation - you could cut some seals out of national geographic and have a cut out of Chuck Norris beat them to death with pasta shape clubs and then squeeze tomato ketchup all over the animating table. Then do another one with the seals and Chuck Norris making love and smiling and dancing whilst wearing clothes they patched up... who patch's their cloths?? if you get a rip in a jumper it wasn't part of an evil plan by the government. If you really and truly feel strongly about this saving the world business... show it through your work!

That's not what it's saying lbrocklehurst, that's not what it's saying at all. The point is about over-consumption, not about not having fun. It's saying you can have fun even without being a serial consumer. It's ok to not like the video, but I'm sorry, for people on this thread to say you should go out shopping in protest just cos you don't like the video is just plain silly and childish. I think you guys just don't like the idea of cutting down on your spending. Right now we have a choice, one day we won't - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8213884.stm

How patronising. It has no substance, just arty-farty animation and arty-farty music. The kind of people that find this convincing are probably the kind of people you could amuse with something shiny. This sickens me.

Have to agree that this could be a good concept that's poorly executed. I'm well aware of how rejuvenating and cost-free skipping around in the fresh air is, as well as the merits of spending money on being with my friends, thanks - not everyone needs to be spoonfed this as a solution. This website comes across as horribly naive and preachy to me I'm afraid, and judging by the comments similar to mine, I'm not alone in my disappointment.

I urge anyone who is pissed at this, to go a spending spree tomorrow. They say buying things wont make you happy? Buying things knowing that it will annoy these hippies, will make me ecstatic. I was trying to do some work that I took home (I help to develop cancer drugs, a real job). I was listen to metal and this abortion came on, totally destroyed my metal mellow. It does feel better to vent. We all need to help to save the enviroment but you make it so hard to with that kind of crap. I think people are scared if they want to save the enviroment, they may become like you people and think it is thought provoking and "cool". Whereas in the real world we just see it as patronising and totally stupid. If I was ever to become like you people I would find the nearest plastic bag and put it to good use (the reason why children should never be allowed them).

I don't know why Ms. Moss was chosen as the theme of these? It could've of easily been a nameless model. Aside from that a really nice animation and a nice idea, not an immediately obvious message but one that makes you think... Good job.

"Economy over environment." Wow, I really don't think you understand the scale of the problem we're facing laurielivsey. The problem is if you believe all the world's scientists (and why wouldn't you) it 'aint really a choice at all. What's the point in buying lots of great stuff if there isn't a habitable planet habitable to enjoy it on?

I dont see the point in these sorry. They didnt make a impact on me at all. And i dont know why you used Kate Moss when there are loads of worse celebs with more plastic surgery and stuff, give her a break. I think the paper doll was quite a cool idea though. oh no, I don't agree at all. I think it's been really effectively done, ok twisted kate doesn't look great but that's the point isn't it? Anyway I think passthison111 is right, this isn't supposed to be a personal attack on Kate Moss at all, she's just being used as a symbol for the constant over-consumption that most of us need to keep a check on in our own lives. This isn't about having plastic surgery! This is about how we look for happiness in the wrong places, and how we think constantly buying stuff will make us happy, but in fact it doesn't and like it or not our planet can't take it. And actually maybe we'd probably find we had richer lives if we spent our money on experiences and hanging out with friends, or volunteering or whatever it is, rather than constantly just buying stuff. We don't need as many things as we think, it doesn't make us happy. That's all the video's trying to say I think, not having a go at Kate Moss or plastic surgery per se. And kalais, I'm afraid I don't think guilting people into being greener really works, it might be hard-hitting but it just makes them all defensive.

I agree with: Idontwanttohearthisagain. Not too concerned about hearing on spotify, but I think this is a pathetic concept. I do hope that this type of softly-softly approach isn't really what everyone expects to stem the tide of consumption in our society and save our home planet is it? Mindless consumption has its roots in selfish lazyness I expect, and with that I doubt a Kate Moss sketch will alter it. How about this: a mini-site where we can post photos of consumers gouging themselves on junk-food, and link it to their twitter and FB accounts... Nothing soft about that!
kalais about 1 year ago.
idontwanttohearthisagain
Absolute rubbish. This advert has come on an inordinate amount of times while I have been listening to spotify today and its just really annoying and patronising. I am an environmental engineer and I can't see what you gained by linking unsustainability and over consumption to plastic surgery OR Kate Moss.
idontwanttohearthisagain about 1 year ago.
passthison111
Surely the video isn't a personal attack on Kate Moss. Isn't it just using her as a point of reference by which we can all check ourselves? I think these videos are extremely positive and useful. Mend, keep- Don't throw away. It's a shame for people to miss the point here.

Would really love to know how much funding you've been given for this piece of drivel. Never have I seen a message so poorly communicated.
andyh
It's green because over-consumption is one of the biggest problems we have. Our buy-quick throw-quick culture means we only use 1% of the stuff we buy six months after we’ve bought it. And making and transporting all that stuff, 99% of which we chuck out anyway, takes vast amounts of fossil fuel energy and produces huge amounts of CO2 and waste. It also eats up raw materials. Rainforests are being logged, wildlife habitats destroyed, and indigenous communities displaced so we can carry on mining to produce the laptops, mp3 players and sweat-shirts that make us cooler (we think) but no happier.
andyh about 1 year ago.
andyh
But the video is not about plastic surgery, laurielivsey, it's about our cycle of endless consumption sold on images of beauty and desirability like lovely supermodel kate. The video story is about two possible lives: one where someone's identity and quest for happiness is based on constantly getting new things, and one where it isn't. Of course the one about total consumption has nasty images in it of kate growing old, and the one based on Sticking With What You Got has nice images of kate growing old. So, perhaps just watch the nice "Stick" one ;-)

these are ridiculous videos, really dislike the fact that you are twisting body image enhancement round into a very bad and questionable action by using nasty and hurtful lyrics and horrible images that don't follow logic and don't have anything to be backed up by. I think it is terrible for Kate Moss and I really do hope that she can find grounds to sue you on. This video is based upon people who feel unfulfilled and don't feel good about themselves and so find an excuse in plastic surgery to attack others who look good; Kate Moss is beautiful, and not just because of Plastic Surgery.

I think it was supposed to be clever although not necessarily funny (I thought it was clever, and lovely animation). The message, it seems to me, is just that you should think about what you consume - sometimes you don't need to get the latest thing, you can Stick With What You Got. Not a lot to understand is there?

Sorry, but I must have missed the whole aim of these videos! Didn't find the idea funny or clever or whatever it was supposed to achive. The message just didn't come across whatsoever!
