Words are not enough.

Words are not enough . . . . except they are, kind of. The second slightly mad podcast idea was to ask writers to write short stories or thought pieces or sketch about walking which we would then combine into a wordfest you could download and listen to while strolling.

Right from the go, the submissions were brilliant. Tracy Chevalier (Girl With a Pearl Earring) cut into her holiday to write and record her piece – thank you Tracy. John Hegley, Britain’s funniest poet, emailed me one morning saying ‘ come and record me this afternoon’ -  and so I did. It took me about half an hour of fumbling to set up the microphone and it took him about three minutes take to record two poems – one perfect take. I was officially awe-struck.

Molly Mackey submitted a clever poem-come-documentary-come artpiece, Scroggs got inebriated and went walking through the sex shops of Soho (as you do), Fiona Dunbar railed comically against men driving Mercs and made us promise that we would bleep out her swearword – it’s done Fiona, it’s done. Thanks to all three of them for three brilliant things.

And lastly Marty, Martin Jones. He recorded a fine poem, sent it in then asked for it back. ‘It’s not good enough if I speak it. I want to sing it.” OK Marty. Two weeks later he emailed the chant-come-song-com-rap-come-something that you’ll hear in the middle of the walkcast. It’s quite unique and, me, I can’t stop humming it.
