Don’t buy anything

Before you buy a new thing, ask yourself two questions:

  1. What’s wrong with the old one?
  2. Do I really need it?

Thousands of new products are introduced every year. And most of them are no longer being used six months later. Chances are we could live quite happily without most of it, especially when the things we already have work just fine.

Buying things for the sake of it is an addiction that damages both pocket and planet and it would benefit both to beat it. So only buy an old thing instead of a new thing if you need to buy anything at all.

Where to not buy anything:

  • Spend a whole day not buying anything on Buy Nothing Day.
  • Become a Compacter and spend a whole year not buying anything except underpants
  • Keep the non-consumer faith with Rev. Billy and his Church of Stop Shopping and save us all from the Shopocalypse.

Here’s a thing…there’s minimalism and then there’s minimalism. In 2001, English installation artist Michael Landy destroyed everything he owned except his cat and his girlfriend as part of an exhibition called Break Down. 7,006 possessions were shredded or crushed into dust including family photos, David Bowie CDs and a Saab 900 car. Some say Landy’s work has always been rubbish. In 1994, an art gallery cleaner threw away his still life composition of a refuse bin by mistake.
