Get better electricity

If you only do one more green electricity thing this month, do this. Switching to a green electricity provider makes more difference than all the other actions this month combined. It will save about a third of your household CO2 in one go.

Here’s how it works. The same amount of electricity you use gets produced somewhere in the country from natural sources like the sun or wind or waves and pumped into the national grid.

So it’s not as direct and snazzy as having a wind turbine on your roof, but it’s just as clean and green, a lot less hassle and you don’t need planning permission.

  • Energywatch.org.uk is a hardcore resource for comparing and contrasting tariffs.
  • Gooshing.co.uk tells you why to change and which one to change to.
  • The Green Electricity Marketplace finds green tariffs in your area and explains them.
  • The kindred spirited Nag site has this friendly Green Energy FAQ.
  • And if you want the official Green Thing suggestion, it’s 100% renewable energy from Good Energy. That’s what we use and everyone says they’re the best.

Here’s a thing ... Sweden plans to become the first country to run completely on renewable energy and will stop using oil completely by 2020. Meanwhile, by the time the UK finishes building its next nuclear reactor, Germany will be generating more electricity from solar power than all our nuclear power stations produce today.
