Stick with what someone else has got

Neighbours. Everybody needs good neighbours. Because not only are they there for one another, but they’re also a great source of ladders, tools, camping gear and all sorts of other stuff.

So next time you come to paint the ceiling or trim the hedges, rather than buying a ladder, pop next door and see if you can borrow your neighbour’s. And, of course, offer to return the favour at some point. Because that’s when good neighbours become good friends.

  • If your neighbours aren’t very friendly or you live on a deserted island, then websites like Neighborrow and Loanables are perfect for you.
  • Doing a spot of DIY? Then you’re probably wishing there were libraries that instead of books had lots of tools which you could borrow. Well, if you’re in Australia, Canada or the US you could be in luck – check out this list of tool libraries to see if there’s one near you.
  • Toy libraries are a bit like tool libraries but with one subtle difference, which you’ll doubtless be able to guess. Here’s one such library and here’s a list of lots of them.
  • Accessories maketh an outfit – and this clever site lets you rent expensive designer bags and shoes rather than having to buy them.
  • If you’re the forgetful type, borrow something without having to give it back. But don’t forget to lend it to someone else when you’re done with it.

Here’s a thing……because we all want it all, we’ve reached a point where we have too much stuff to fit in our homes and have to pay people to store it for us. Americans spend $20 billion every year on self-storage. With a few exceptions, it’s used for abdominizers (as seen on late night infomercials), fake pearl necklaces (as seen on home shopping channels), and billions upon billions of lost marbles.
