Turning lights off when you leave a room is all well and good but there are still plenty of other things left on, secretly sucking on the teat of your household power supply like needy, greedy invisible babies.
So turn everything off that you’re not using. TVs, Hi-Fis, videos, consoles, DVD players, mobile phone chargers, computers, massage chairs, whatever. If in doubt, give it the parrot test: if it’s looking at you with a red eye it’s not switched off, it’s just sleeping.
Here's a thing .. in the average UK household, you’ll find up to a dozen devices on standby or charging which wastes around 800,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. That’s the same amount of CO2 as two coal-fired power stations, and more than everyone in Glasgow flying to New York and back.
