Switch it all off

Turning lights off when you leave a room is all well and good but there are still plenty of other things left on, secretly sucking on the teat of your household power supply like needy, greedy invisible babies.

So turn everything off that you’re not using. TVs, Hi-Fis, videos, consoles, DVD players, mobile phone chargers, computers, massage chairs, whatever. If in doubt, give it the parrot test: if it’s looking at you with a red eye it’s not switched off, it’s just sleeping.

  • Intellipanel turns off everything connected to your PC (printers, scanners and so on) when you shut down the computer.

  • Standby Buster and Bye Bye Standby both let you switch all your appliances off with one click.

  • INSTEON is a remote control panel which you can use to turn off lighting and other appliances without having to move from your sofa.

Here's a thing .. in the average UK household, you’ll find up to a dozen devices on standby or charging which wastes around 800,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. That’s the same amount of CO2 as two coal-fired power stations, and more than everyone in Glasgow flying to New York and back.
