Use less all around

Modern technology has given us the internet, the Nintendo Wii, and, of course, the radio hat – a hat that looks like any other, but actually contains an AM/FM radio for your listening pleasure. Genius. Anyway, to that illustrious list must now be added low flow showerheads and taps, which cut the amount of water you use in half while keeping the water pressure the same. And because you heat less water up, you cut your energy bills and CO2 emissions too. Ain’t technology wonderful?

Here’s how to go with the low-flow:

  • Low flow taps and aerators can reduce your water consumption by up to 70%. Have a look at the clever devices you can get from companies like Tapmagic, Aqualogic, and others. And if you’re in Australia, these funky looking water savers just click straight on to your taps.
  • You can also get aerated and low flow showerheads that use less water but still give you a good, hard spray.
  • And if you’re feeling totally hardcore about green cleanliness, here’s how to wash using less than 10 litres of water.

Here's a thing… the 10 second shower test may sound like something that happens at boys’ boarding schools, but it’s actually a way of working out whether your shower is low flow or not. Run your shower for 10 seconds into a bucket, and if you collect more than 1.5 litres, you could do with going low flow. You'll save 30,000 litres of water a year if you do – as well as enough money to buy a whole load of tuck and comics.
