Use less in the washing machine

Washing machines these days have so many buttons and knobs and dials they look more like the cockpits of spacecrafts than things to put your dirty smalls in. But all these options are a good thing as it means you can turn off the pre-wash setting. British people waste a whopping six billion litres of water a year pre-washing their clothes when washing powders are so good nowadays that you really needn’t bother.

Here’s a thing… if everyone in the UK stopped using a pre-wash we’d save 128 million litres of water a week. That’s enough to supply the daily needs of over 850,000 people; or fill 6000 Olympic-sized swimming pools a year; or make an unfeasibly large round of tea.
