Wrap up your windows

Installing double-glazing is like putting a big, warm overcoat round your home’s windows. It can cut the heat lost through your windows by half, saving nearly ¾ tonne of CO2 per year. And if you can’t afford to double-glaze all your windows, just do those in the rooms you use the most.

A couple of things you might have wanted to know about double-glazing but were too glazed over to ask:

  • The Energy Saving Trust or this directory will help you find a good double-glazing company in the UK.
  • Windows have energy ratings from A to G and the most efficient have the Energy Saving Recommended logo. Here’s a list of sites selling Energy Saving Recommended windows.
  • Secondary glazing is a cheaper alternative to double-glazing and doesn’t change how your windows look from the outside.

Here’s a thing…..according to Energy Watch, UK gas prices have risen 90% since 2003. The average gas bill now stands at £630, and the nation’s total bill at £14 billion. Let’s see if we can reduce that to £13 billion next year, and use the other £1 billion to buy nice old thing presents for each other. See what we did there?
