how do i join up?

Join here by entering your email, username and password. Simple. We’ll suggest a username for you based on the first part of your email address, but you can change that if you want.

Why should I join up?

Because it takes 45 seconds and it’s free and we send you the world’s most inspiring green content and you get the chance to add to this site and stand up and be counted with other Green Things in [171] countries telling [43,275] stories and saving [3.5m] kgs of CO2 but only if you join up because life’s like that.

Please don't join up just to make yourself feel good or to enjoy the videos and stories and then do nothing. Green Thing is about inspiring people to do greener things, lead greener lives and make a real difference so join up if you're ready to be part of that.

How do I navigate around?

There are seven Green Thing actions to inspire you to live a greener life. You can get to them at any time by clicking an icon on the header of every page.

Navigation

On each action page you’ll find content for that particular Green Thing (videos and podcasts to Walk the Walk to, for instance), as well as stories about people doing them. You’ll also find information on that particular action and a link to a fuller explanation of why it’s important as well as links to other related actions you can do.

Each page on the site has the same header and a footer. The other navigation links on the header let you ‘Join Up’ if you’re not yet registered, ‘Sign In’ if you are registered, find out ‘About’ Green Thing and ‘Add A Story’ to inspire other people to do the Green Thing too.

User_nav

All these pages should be self-explanatory once you’re there but here’s more information about adding stories if you need it. You can also subscribe to the information on any page by clicking the orange RSS feed icon Feed

The footer contains a number of different pieces of information. First you’ll see a three column list of the latest people to join Green Thing, the latest stories that members have told, and the latest discussions people have been having on the site. Underneath that there’s a link to the latest posting on the Green Thing blog.

Footer

Finally, along the bottom of every footer you’ll find links to other pages on the site like a list of Green Thing’s ‘Partners’, or this ‘Help’ section, or ‘Contact’ details, and so on. Also legal stuff like ‘Terms’, ‘Privacy policy’, and the like.

How do I invite my friends to Green Thing?

Click on the ‘Invite friends to join’ link on your profile page header.

I’m a developer, is there a Green Thing API?

Yes, it’s documented here: http://dev.dothegreenthing.com/trac/wiki/APIDetails

Tell me about the Green Thing email newsletter

The idea is to do all seven Green Things as much as you can to live a greener life. But we also focus on one a month to keep it digestible and simple. The email newsletters help introduce you to that month’s green action and remind you to do it.

They feature the latest inspiring content from brilliant writers, directors, designers and musicians to help you do that particular Green Thing, plus stories about Green Thing members who are already doing it. You also get information about what the community has achieved together.

We’ll send you four of these a month. You can opt out at any time by going to the Communications Preferences under the Edit Profile link on your profile page.

How do I add content or contribute to the site community?

Once you’ve joined Green Thing you can add a story about how you’re doing the Green Thing really easily by just typing in a few words plus a link to a bit of video or photo or audio content on the Web. Here’s more information about adding stories if you need it.

You can also comment on other people’s stories as well as rate it by clicking ‘I like this’ Like – the more people who like a story, the more prominence it gets on the site. You can also comment on any other content on the site, from videos to blog posts and have your say in the Forums too.

Finally, when you see a story that inspires you to do the Green Thing, or just one you like a lot, you can click ‘Follow’ Follow under the name of the person who wrote it and you’ll be able to keep track of other stories they write in the future on your profile page.

How does my Profile work?

First, the header. Your profile header gives people some important information about your Green Thing activities. There’s the total amount of ‘views’ and ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ your stories have had, the date you joined, and how much CO2 you’ve saved. If you want, you can click ‘edit your profile’ and add in up to three links to other profiles you have online too.

The ‘Edit your profile’ preferences also let you change your profile picture and other details, plus set preferences for how Green Thing communicates with you. There are also settings to link your Green Thing activity to and from other services like Twitter and Facebook.

If you click the ‘invite friends to join’ link, we make it easy to do just that.

Your profile also keeps a record of all the stories you write, like a list of blog posts down the middle of the page. And in the right hand column you can see the latest stories from the people you ‘Follow’, and underneath that a list of who’s Following you.

How can I be sure my privacy is being protected?

If you’re worried about Green Thing passing your email address to lots of spammers, you can stop worrying. Read our Privacy Policy and see.
