What are stories?

Once someone has done the Green Thing in the real world, we want them to tell their stories on Green Thing to inspire others to do it too. The ‘Add a story’ is an easy way to do that and is essentially a simple blogging tool. A ‘story’ can be anything from a few lines of text to a photo via your mobile phone or a link to some relevant image or video you found on the Web.

How do I add one to the site?

You must have a profile and be signed in to add a story There’s a text area to write in, a file upload field, plus a URL field so you can link to existing content pretty much anywhere on the Web, and. The site automatically processes this URL to embed content into the story post.

How do I rate other people’s stories?

Click on “I Like This’ under any story. You can add a comment too. If you want to keep seeing more stories by that person then click “Follow +” under their user name and a feed of their stories will be listed on your Profile page.

How do you decide which stories get featured on the site?

Stories are displayed in various places across the site. All stories are shown in the ‘Latest stories’ feed on the footer of each page. In other places, like each Green Thing action page, “interesting” stories are highlighted. Interestingness is calculated from a combination of newness, comments, ratings, and relevance.

What does it mean to ‘Follow’ someone?

If you’re familiar with Twitter, ‘Following’ people on Green Thing works the same way. Following just means you get their latest stories listed on your Profile page so you can keep track of what they’re adding to the site. If someone’s story inspires you and you want to keep seeing more of their stuff, following them is an easy way to do it.

What does it mean if someone ‘Follows’ me?

It means someone has been inspired by your story and wants to see more of them. You’ll see a list of everyone who’s following you on your Profile page. You can set your ‘Communication Preferences’ (click the ‘Edit Profile’ link on your profile page header) so Green Thing emails you when you have a new follower.
