I go to boarding school. When I am there I am heavily involved in the environmental group there.
One of our main projects is one on food waste. At our school we waste £15,000 worth of food a year. We are trying to change that, by encouraging people to take what they will eat and eat all of it.
But the size of the issue is horrendous. People will often get a whole meal, show it to the member of staff on duty (who has to check they're eating) and then throw the entire thing in the bin.
Our other campaign is to get people to recycle. Obviously, this is easier, but we can't do anything until we get a grant from the bursar to buy new recycling bins for all the boarding houses. We have waited months and it is still uncertain whether we will get this. But we have recently seen a glimmer of hope, in the form of a notification that they are considering it.
Slowly, but surely, we hope to get it all off the ground.
I'm doing the green thing by helping in the effort to make an otherwise extremely wasteful school more eco-friendly.
