I get a lot of my clothes through second-hand shops and make the rest. So far this winter i have bought two velvet skirts, a woolen jacket and two jumpers second-hand. In total this cost me £18!
My best buy was a slightly felted, but still beautifully soft, thick 100% pure cashmere jumper for £6!
The trick is to visit individual shops in relatively wealthy areas, for instance a local hospice shop. You will hopefully find good quality clothes at really cheap prices. Oxfam is the worst shop, their clothes are really expensive and second-hand shops in poorer areas tend to stock clothes with very poor fabric quality that are not worth paying for.
Good fabrics can be used for years, old woolen jumpers I have bought second-hand have had a third life after I have worn them enough as I boil wash them to make felt and then turn them into slippers, felt mittens, even Christmas decorations. Wool, velvet, silk and linen clothes can be cut up and turned into lovely patchwork throws, cushions and bags. And you don't need a sewing machine; handsewing is fine for all the above, just need a bit more patience and time.
