Considerations

  • Traditional lighting based on filament lamps is inefficient and wasteful of resources.
    • Low energy lighting systems are available in many attractive formats
    • Lighting systems can be upgraded with relative ease.
    • The environmental impact and cost of ownership of low energy lighting is significantly lower that for filament lamps.
  • Natural lighting is free so making it more accessible is essential.
    • Keep windows clean and unobstructed.
    • Remove net curtains.
    • Consider light guides to illuminate areas that don't have windows.
    • Paint walls and ceilings with colours that reflect light and brighten the room.

REDUCE

Use better, more efficient technology, less

Lighting technology has improved to the point where traditional filament lamps are now the most inefficient source of lighting and can be readily replaced by newer generation compact fluorescent and LED types.

REUSE AND RECYCLE

Make better use of natural illumination

Natural lighting is a much underused resource. Even in full daylight many people keep their lights burning bright. In reality, this is mostly unnecessary in terms of required levels of illumination.

There are many new and innovative products such as the light pipe that permit areas that lack direct access to sunlight to benefit from natural lighting.
