Carbon Saved by Draught-Proofing Your Home

As much as 20% of heat loss in the home occurs because of heat loss through the small joins and gaps around windows, doors, skylights, as well as letter boxes and catflaps.

Draught-proofing throughout your home can save up to 140 kg of CO2 per year. 1

Installing Draught-Proofing Materials

Draught-proofing is the cheapest way of limiting heat loss and improving the comfort of your home. Brushes, foams, sealants, adhesive strips and are all available from DIY stores, however in the UK you will need to ensure that the materials conform to the British standard BS 7386. Materials with this certification can last up to 20 years. You can easily locate where your draughts are coming from by going around each room with a candle, or simply holding up your hand to windows. If you'd rather have it installed professionally, the Draught Proofing Advisory Association (DPAA) 2 also has a list of installers, and materials installed by DPAA members are guaranteed for 20 years. Only a quarter of homes are currently adequately draught-proofed. 3
