Actions

Explore all the water actions organised by how they help you REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE

Overview

With climate change producing less stable and more unpredictable patterns of weather , rain water is falling to excess in some areas, causing flooding, and not falling at all in others, causing drought conditions.

Water abstraction , treatment, supply and distribution, all require energy. We can reduce our use of water and thereby reduce the risk of local water shortages. In addition, by reducing water use we can also reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint.

The storage of rainwater together with the capture of waste (grey) water from household use (bathing/washing) can augment usefully the water we obtain from the water main.

Considerations

  • Water availability is extremely variable on a global basis. 1
  • 70% of the Earth's surface 2 is covered by water. However, only about 3% of this is potable. 3
  • A person living in Sub-Saharan Africa uses about 10 to 20 litres of water a day.
  • A person living in North America uses about 326 litres of water a day!
  • Typically 3% of water produced at a large water treatment works is used for drinking purposes. 4
  • In summer about half of all treated water is used to water lawns and gardens.
